"But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son." Galatians 4:4. Providence had been preparing the way for the advent of Christ. The gracious purpose of God had been slowly and silently working its way through the centuries. The time He had appointed had come; and as He had promised to Abraham and to David, He was about to establish the throne of His kingdom in a manner that would confound the wisdom of man.
For four thousand years the human race had been decreasing in physical strength, in mental power, and in moral worth. Christ came to put a limit to this terrible depravity. The earth had grown old in sin. Rebellion, crime, and superstition had corrupted everything. The chosen nation, appointed to be the depository of the holy oracles, had become blind to their meaning. Spiritual power had grown faint. Self had taken the place of God. The religion of the age was a form — a round of ceremony — which had lost its power to save the soul.
When Jesus came to our world, the nations were ripe for a great movement. In fulfillment of His purpose of love, God had scattered the Jews among all peoples, that they might be the carriers of His knowledge. The Hebrew Scriptures had been translated into the Greek language; and while many had received a vague knowledge of the promised Messiah, they longed for His coming. The world was waiting, though it knew it not, for the appearing of the Light of the world.
The world was waiting, though it knew it not, for the appearing of the Light of the world.
Desire of Ages, p. 32Had the Saviour come in the glory of heaven, with the attendance of heavenly hosts, the proud sons of earth would have looked upon Him as they look upon earthly monarchs — with wonder, perhaps, but not with love. Had He come in the majesty of a conqueror, He would have appealed to the ambition of the human heart. But He came as one of the lowliest — to teach men that God's thoughts are not as man's thoughts. So great was the condescension of the Son of God that He chose poverty and humiliation as the conditions of His earthly life.
God spent centuries preparing the world — through empires, languages, and scattered peoples — for the coming of Christ. What does this long preparation reveal about how God works in history, and how does that shape your trust in His timing in your own life?
Under the Roman Empire, the world had been brought to a remarkable state of readiness. One government, one law, one language — these were conditions that God's providence had shaped to allow the gospel to spread rapidly once the Saviour had come and gone back to heaven. The Roman roads that carried legions of soldiers would soon carry apostles bearing the news of a risen Saviour from nation to nation.
The Greek language — spoken across the Mediterranean world — was the instrument God would use to carry the gospel to every corner of the earth. Through Alexander's conquests, a common tongue had been given to a divided world. When the New Testament was written, it would be written in Greek, understood by educated men from Rome to Persia, from Egypt to the Black Sea. God had prepared the vessel before He poured in the wine.
The Jewish people, scattered by Assyrian and Babylonian exile and settled in communities across the known world, carried with them the Hebrew Scriptures and the knowledge of the one true God. In every city a synagogue stood where the oracles of God were read. Gentiles who had grown weary of their empty idols found in the synagogue a teaching that spoke of righteousness, a God of justice and mercy, and a promised Deliverer. The world had been seeded for a harvest.
God had prepared the vessel before He poured in the wine.
Desire of Ages, p. 33But it was not only outward conditions that God was preparing. The human heart itself had been prepared. Philosophy had been given its fullest opportunity and had failed. The Epicurean said: Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. The Stoic said: Bear all and feel nothing. Neither could fill the aching void in the human heart. The world was asking the question that had no answer in all the wisdom of men: "What must I do to find peace? Where is the life that truly lives?" The hour had come for God's answer.
God used the Roman Empire, Greek language, and Jewish diaspora as instruments of preparation without those empires ever knowing they were serving His purposes. Where do you see God using unlikely or even ungodly circumstances to advance His purposes in the world today?
The philosophy and religion of the heathen world had utterly failed to satisfy the yearning of the human heart. Men had grown weary of pomp and pageantry, of legend and fable. They longed for something real, something true. Great multitudes who had been trained in the heathen religions were reaching out blindly, feeling after truth. In their darkness, they cried after light. They asked questions that no earthly philosophy could answer.
Even among the philosophers themselves there was an awakening. Men whose minds had searched the heights of human reason found those heights empty. Plato had seen glimpses of truth — had spoken of the eternal forms, of a reality beyond the material world — yet he could not reveal the God behind the vision. He could only say, "There is something more." In the schools of philosophy, the wisest admitted their ignorance. They had theories about God but they did not know Him. The confession of the wisest man in Athens was the confession of all: "I know only that I know nothing."
Amid all this darkness, the Scriptures brought to the Jews in every city had been spreading their light. The prophecies of Isaiah — "He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed" — were being read in synagogues across the world. Souls were being prepared, though they could not yet see exactly how the promises would be fulfilled. The heart of humanity was being made ready for One who would say, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
There is something more.
May laing butang pa.
Desire of Ages, p. 35The wisest minds of the ancient world admitted they could not find God through human reason alone. Where do you find human wisdom falling short today, and how does that emptiness point people toward something — or Someone — greater?
Joseph and Mary, having traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem in obedience to the decree of Augustus, found the town crowded with travelers and the inn full. In the city of David, in the very place where prophecy had appointed His birth, the Son of God found no room. Not a single door was opened to receive the King of the universe. No honored guest chamber welcomed the One for whom all heaven had been watching since eternity.
In a stable — amid the lowing of cattle and the quiet of the night — the Saviour of the world was born. The Son of God had left the courts of heaven where ten thousand times ten thousand ministered to Him, where the cherubim and seraphim covered their faces before His glory. He came to lie in a manger. He who had filled the universe with His presence now lay as a helpless infant, wrapped in the bands that Mary had prepared. He who was the Bread of Life lay in a feed trough. He who was the Light of the world was born in darkness.
Yet this was not failure — it was plan. The infinite God had chosen to reveal Himself in the lowest and most approachable of all conditions, so that the poorest and most desperate of men might know that He had come for them. The shepherds on the hillside — men of humble occupation, regarded with some contempt by the religious establishment — would be the first to hear. God announced the birth of His Son not to the scribes in Jerusalem but to working men on the night watch in a field outside Bethlehem.
The infinite God had chosen to reveal Himself in the lowest and most approachable of all conditions.
Desire of Ages, p. 44Jesus was born where there was no room — in the place of animals, in the cold of night, to parents far from home. What does it say about God's character that He chose to enter the world in this way, and what does it mean for those who feel there is "no room" for them in the places that matter?
That night, upon the lonely hills outside Bethlehem, shepherds kept their watch over their flocks. Suddenly the darkness was pierced with light — not the cold light of the stars but the warm and living radiance of heaven. An angel stood before them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them. They were sore afraid. But the angel said, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."
And then — as though the angel's word had unlocked a door held shut through ages of waiting — the whole sky was filled with the multitude of the heavenly host. They had been restrained till this moment. Now they sang: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." The song that Adam and Eve had heard in Eden, that the angels had sung in the beginning when the morning stars sang together — now it broke forth with new meaning over the hills of Bethlehem, for the promise of a Saviour that had sustained the ages was fulfilled at last.
Gipilit sila hangtud niining sandalia.
As soon as the angels departed, the shepherds said one to another, "Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us." And they came with haste. These simple men who had been faithful in their daily work — honest keepers of flocks in the night — were the first to hear the message of salvation and the first to respond. They did not debate. They did not ask to see the sign again. They rose and went. And finding it even as the angel had said, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Himaya sa Dios sa kahitas-an, ug kalinaw sa yuta, maayong kabubut-on ngadto sa mga tawo.
Luke 2:14The shepherds heard the news and immediately went to see. They didn't debate, delay, or wait for confirmation — they rose and went. What might it look like to respond to the gospel with that same immediacy and simplicity today?
In Christ were united the divine and the human — the infinite God and mortal man. The union was not an angel taking a body but the eternal Son taking upon Himself our nature. He did not merely appear to be human — He was human. He was touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He knew hunger and thirst, weariness and grief. He was subject to the same physical sufferings that beset us, exposed to the same temptations that arise from our environment. He was as truly a son of Adam as He was the Son of God.
Why did this matter so deeply? Because no angel, however faithful, could represent the human race in the great controversy. No other being could take on our debt, feel our weakness from the inside, and still live the perfect life that God's law required. The Saviour had to be one of us — truly one of us — yet also the infinite God, whose life would have infinite worth. Only in the union of the two natures was the plan of salvation possible. This mystery is not to be explained away; it is to be adored.
Kining misteryo dili sulayan ug pasibuton; kini gipasimba.
This great condescension — the Creator entering the creature's existence, the Almighty becoming an infant — was the most costly act in the history of the universe. Heaven gave its greatest treasure; the Son gave His glory; the Spirit overshadowed the moment of incarnation. And the manger in Bethlehem was the point at which eternity entered time, at which the infinite became finite, at which Love put on a face and a name and a flesh — so that we might know, beyond all doubting, that God is for us.
In Christ were united the divine and the human — the infinite God and mortal man.
Kang Kristo gihiusa ang diosnon ug ang tawohanon — ang walay katapusang Dios ug mortal nga tawo.
Desire of Ages, p. 49The Incarnation means God didn't just observe our suffering from a distance — He entered it fully, in a body, as one of us. How does this truth change the way you bring your weaknesses, your temptations, or your pain to God?
"A Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." In this one sentence the whole range of human need met its answer. The shepherds heard it and they ran. But the proclamation was not for shepherds alone. "Which shall be to all people" — the angel had said it plainly. The birth of Christ was not the founding of a Jewish sect, not the beginning of a national religious movement, but the appearing in the world of the one Light that would give light to every man who comes into the world. The gospel has never had an ethnic boundary.
The chapter closes with this summary truth: God had prepared the world — through empires and languages and scattered peoples — and then He came. Not in the way the world expected. Not with the flourish the proud would have demanded. He came as a baby, born in the poorest of conditions, announced to the humblest of listeners. But in His very coming He stated the terms of His kingdom: it is not for the powerful or the proud, but for the poor in spirit, the hungry, the seeking. The Beatitudes had not yet been spoken, but Bethlehem had enacted them.
As you review this week — the centuries of preparation, the hunger of the ancient world, the manger, the angels, the shepherds, the mystery of the Incarnation — what stands out most clearly? The God who prepared the world through four thousand years of history is the same God who is preparing your heart today. The patient, purposeful love that led the wise men to the star, the shepherds to the manger, and the world to its Saviour is the same love that holds you now. You are part of this story. You were included in the "all people" of the angel's announcement from the beginning.
Ikaw bahin niining istorya. Ikaw gilakip sa "tanang katawhan" sa pagpahibalo sa manulonda gikan sa sinugdan.
The patient, purposeful love that led the world to its Saviour is the same love that holds you now.
