The Law of the Firstborn

Exodus 13:2  ·  Numbers 18:15–16  ·  Luke 2:22–24

By the law of Moses, every firstborn son was to be presented to the Lord and redeemed. "All the firstborn are Mine," God had said; "on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto Me all the firstborn in Israel." Exodus 13:2. The law required that the child be brought to the temple, a price of redemption paid, and the child formally consecrated to God. It was a law pointing forward — the firstborn of every family was a symbol of the Firstborn of heaven who would one day give Himself for the world.

Now the One whom all these centuries of ceremony had been pointing to was Himself brought to the temple to fulfill the law He had given. Joseph and Mary came — not in royal procession, not with the wealth that custom permitted — but with the offering of the poor: two turtledoves or two young pigeons. Leviticus 12:8. The Son of God was redeemed with the price of the poor, because He had come to identify Himself with the poor, to stand in the place of those who had nothing to offer.

The scene is quiet, unremarkable to all but a few. A carpenter and his young wife, carrying a pair of birds in a clay pot, walking up the temple steps among hundreds of other families. No herald announced their coming. No crowd parted to let them through. The Creator of the universe passed through the gate of His own house unrecognized — except by those whose hearts had been prepared by years of faithful watching.

“

Desire of Ages, p. 55

In all of heaven's economy, the outward form matters less than the inward reality. The two pigeons that Mary and Joseph brought were less valuable than the most lavish temple sacrifice, but they were given in love and obedience — and they were given in the name of the One to whom the whole temple system had been pointing. God receives what is given with a whole heart. The poor who offer little with love give more than the rich who offer much with pride.

The Creator entered His own temple as an unknown infant, brought by poor parents with the smallest allowable offering. What does it mean for your worship today that God values what is given with a whole heart over what is given with display?

Simeon — A Life of Patient Waiting

Luke 2:25–28  ·  Psalm 130:5–6  ·  Isaiah 25:9

In Jerusalem at that time there was a man named Simeon — just, devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. In an age when faith in the promise had grown cold, when the religious leaders had exchanged the living hope of Scripture for the dry ritual of tradition, Simeon kept the ancient fire burning. He had read Isaiah's prophecies with the eyes of faith. He had prayed over them. He had staked his life upon them. And the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

On the day Joseph and Mary came to the temple, the Spirit moved Simeon to go there too. He did not know why — only that the inner prompting was clear and he must follow. He came. He saw the young couple at the gate. And in that moment of meeting, the Spirit confirmed what his heart had long been waiting for. He hurried to them. He took the child in his arms. And with the child cradled in his old hands — this man who had waited decades for this moment — he blessed God and said, "Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word: for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation."

There is a lesson in Simeon's life for all who are tempted to give up waiting. He had not made the promise easier by doubting it. He had not protected himself from disappointment by deciding the fulfillment would come in a form he could accept or deny. He had simply held on — and the Spirit had held him. Those who wait for God with a faithful heart are not abandoned. The promise that sustains them will be fulfilled — in God's time, in God's way. Simeon's arms held the proof of that.

“

Mine eyes have seen Thy salvation.

Simeon's faith was not theoretical — it was a decades-long patient waiting, holding the promise when there was no visible evidence. What promises of God are you waiting on right now, and what does Simeon's example teach you about how to wait?

A Light to the Gentiles

Luke 2:29–35  ·  Isaiah 42:6  ·  Isaiah 49:6

Simeon's song — now called the Nunc Dimittis — was the first full-throated declaration that the Messiah had come not for Israel alone but for the whole world. "A light to lighten the Gentiles," he sang, "and the glory of Thy people Israel." Isaiah had said the same: "It is too light a thing that Thou shouldest be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give Thee for a light to the Gentiles, that Thou mayest be My salvation unto the end of the earth." Isaiah 49:6. Simeon saw what the religious establishment of his day had missed: the Messiah was not a tribal hero but a universal Saviour.

And then Simeon turned to Mary and spoke a word that no mother could have heard without the deepest trembling: "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." The child in her arms was the Consolation of Israel — but also the Great Divider. Confronted with the truth that He embodied, men and women would be forced to a choice. And Mary herself would not be spared the pain of that confrontation.

The joy of the temple scene cannot be separated from its solemnity. The same event that brought Simeon to his knees in thanksgiving brought the shadow of the cross over Mary's heart. The Saviour who came to bring peace did not come to bring comfortable peace — He came to bring peace at a cost, the peace that passes understanding, purchased at Calvary. Those who love Christ most deeply will also know, as Mary did, something of the sword. The gospel is gentle and piercing at once.

Week 3  ·  Wednesday  ·  July 22

Anna — Faithful to the End

Luke 2:36–38  ·  Psalm 84:10  ·  1 Timothy 5:5

There was also Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age — she had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She departed not from the temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. Luke 2:36–37. The temple was her home. The worship of God was her life. In a world that had largely given up the faith of the prophets, Anna had kept vigil.

Coming up to them at that very moment — the same moment that Simeon was holding the child — Anna gave thanks likewise unto the Lord and spoke of the child to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. She had been there for decades, praying for this day. And now, in a moment that the world would not notice and history would barely record, her prayer was answered. The prophetess who had served through a long widowhood in the temple courts saw the redemption she had prayed for, and she proclaimed it to all who were waiting.

Both Simeon and Anna are portraits of a life lived in faithful obscurity. Neither was famous. Neither had power or influence in the religious establishment. They were old people who prayed and waited in a temple that had largely forgotten what the temple was for. But they were watching — and what watching people see, sleeping people miss. The child who passed unnoticed by the high priests and scribes was recognized and proclaimed by two aging prayer-warriors who had never stopped believing the promise.

The Temple and the Truth

John 2:19–21  ·  Haggai 2:7  ·  Malachi 3:1

The dedication scene illuminates one of the great ironies of the Incarnation: the one to whom the entire temple system pointed — the Lamb of God, the Great High Priest, the Lord of the temple — entered that temple as an unknown infant. The priests who performed their rituals that day, the scribes who taught in the courts, the Levites who tended the sacred furniture — none of them knew that the meaning of everything they were doing had walked through their gate that morning in Mary's arms.

This is a word of caution for all who handle sacred things professionally. It is possible to serve the temple without knowing the Lord of the temple. It is possible to perform the liturgy without meeting the One the liturgy points to. It is possible to be expert in theology and blind to the Theologian. Simeon and Anna — without official position, without scholarly credentials — saw what the professionals missed. The difference was not knowledge but a living, expectant faith that kept the heart open and the eyes watching.

The chapter also invites us to see the deep continuity between the Old and New Testaments. Every sacrifice offered in that temple — every lamb, every dove, every grain offering — was pointing to Christ. When Mary offered her two birds, she was fulfilling a law that her own Son had given, about a sacrifice that her own Son would one day be. The ceremony, the prophecy, the fulfillment, and the Fulfiller were all present in that temple on that day. The whole arc of Scripture curved upward and met its zenith in that small bundle in an old man's arms.

Consecrated from the Beginning

Luke 2:39–40  ·  Proverbs 22:6  ·  Isaiah 11:1–3

When Joseph and Mary had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him. Luke 2:39–40. After the prophetic drama of the temple — the aged Simeon, the prophetess Anna, the words of glory and the shadow of the sword — the family returned to an ordinary life in an ordinary village. The King of the universe grew up in Nazareth.

The chapter emphasizes what consecration actually means. To consecrate means to set apart for holy purpose. The firstborn was consecrated in the temple ceremony — but the real consecration was not the ceremony; it was the whole life lived in accordance with the purpose for which the child had been set apart. Jesus was formally dedicated at the temple, but His consecration was lived out in the years that followed: the years of faithful, humble, holy childhood in Nazareth, learning obedience through the things He suffered, growing in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.

This is the pattern for all who are consecrated to God. The ceremony of dedication — a baptism, a confirmation, a commissioning — is the beginning, not the end. What follows the ceremony is the life that gives it meaning. A life of quiet faithfulness, of learning and growing, of faithful obedience in ordinary things — this is what consecration looks like when it leaves the temple and comes home to Nazareth. Every Christian is a firstborn of heaven, and the meaning of that is lived out in the daily.

“

The ceremony of dedication is the beginning, not the end.

What the Dedication Declares

Romans 12:1  ·  1 Corinthians 6:19–20  ·  Hebrews 10:5–7

The dedication of Christ in the temple was not only an act of obedience to the law of Moses. It was a declaration — a statement about what kind of God has come among us and what He has come to do. He came to be ours, fully, without reservation, from the moment of birth to the hour of death. He who had everything gave Himself entirely. The firstborn of heaven was presented to the Father as ours, and the rites of dedication declared that the Giver of the law was also its Keeper — that the Author of the covenant was also its faithful Partner.

As you review this week — the law of the firstborn, the aged Simeon's decades of waiting, his song and his prophecy, Anna's lifetime of prayer, the professionals who missed what the elderly saw, the family's return to ordinary Nazareth — what thread runs through it all? Grace seen by the faithful, missed by the formal. The kingdom recognized not by rank but by readiness. The Saviour welcomed not in the palaces of the great but in the arms of two old people who had never stopped believing.

Here is the question the chapter leaves with us: What is your life consecrated to? Not by ceremony — by daily choice. Not by a single day's commitment — by the accumulation of ordinary days lived in the direction of the Kingdom. Simeon did not arrive at his moment of recognition by accident; he was there because he had been there — every day, for decades, watching. Anna was there for the same reason. What you will see is shaped by what you consistently watch for. Let the dedication of the Saviour renew the dedication of the self.

Reflection for Saturday Pamalandong alang sa Sabado

This week we saw the child Jesus presented in the temple — and two faithful people who recognized Him while the professionals missed Him. What does your week of reading this chapter call you to? How will you carry the lessons of Simeon and Anna into the next week?
